Steven Malanga, City JournalEvery ten years, after the U.S. Census releases its latest population reports, most of the 50 states begin the complicated process of drawing new election districts. As you might expect, partisan bickering and maneuvering inevitably distort things. So a decade ago, Arizona voters decided to end the partisanship by removing the redistricting process from the state legislature and placing it in the hands of an independent commission. Last year, the new commission, consisting of two Democrats, two Republicans, and a nonpartisan chair, got to work on its first set of maps after the 2010 census.

Jennifer Rubin, Washington PostIt is not often that a campaign is so candid about its determination to slice-and-dice the electorate, appeal to narrow sectarian interests and provide no overarching vision to draw the country together. But the Obama campaign is extraordinary — in its cynicism and arrogance. This month The Post reported that the Obama campaign is all about “specific appeals aimed at women, African Americans, students, military families and countless others. The result is a campaign that might be the most micro-targeted in history, attempting to use the power of the Web and social media to...

Joe Klein, TimeThe meme of the day in journo-world is that President Obama has stumbled at the outset of the general election campaign. The evidence for this? Well, uh, there isn't very much, really"“except that a few Democrats have criticized his campaign's attacks on Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital and that Obama's fundraising is merely humongous, instead of obscenely humongous. The two phenomena are linked, of course: Obama isn't getting the usual haul from Wall Street because he has outrageously"“outrageously!"“tried...

Sheila Bair, FortuneWhen I was a child, my sister and I loved watching the goings-on at a chicken farm near my grandmother's house in rural Kansas. Chickens are interesting social animals, resembling, somewhat, the way we in Washington interact with one another. They were always on the lookout for one vulnerable bird that they would corner in the coop and then peck relentlessly on its head.

John Podhoretz, New York PostLike a Seurat painting or a pixilated photograph coming into focus, there are now enough tiny dots of independent data to begin to form a preliminary picture of Barack Obama’s re-election effort — and the emerging image is bleak.Tuesday night, two more Democratic primaries brought bad news to the sitting Democratic president. More than four of every 10 Democrats who went to the polls in Arkansas and Kentucky voted against him. Obama was able to secure only 58 percent of the primary vote in each state.

Suzanne Fields, Washington TimesHillary Clinton has gone through more reincarnations than Shirley MacLaine, who insists that when she was a Moorish girl in the ninth century, she had an affair with Charlemagne. Hillary has no such exotic tales in her past -- Bubba is exotic enough -- but she has gone through a number of roles for women who no longer stay home and bake cookies. She was not content to stay home to be a first lady, and was perceived as a "co-president" before her disastrous scheme for reforming health care put a humiliating end to that. She was elected senator from New York to enable a run for...

Ronald Brownstein, National JournalThrough the campaign's early stages, it has often seemed as if President Obama and his advisers are methodically working through a checklist. For each group central to his electoral coalition, the president has either instigated or escalated conflicts with the GOP on symbolically powerful wedge issues. With an eye on young voters, Obama has confronted congressional Republicans over maintaining reduced rates for student loans. Targeting women, he has pushed access to no-cost contraception in health insurance and legislation to combat domestic violence.

Steven Greenhut, ReasonDemocrats and Republicans in the California Legislature have once again broadcast this troubling fact: They are far more concerned about the ever-expanding demands of a relatively small group of public sector union members than they are about the public welfare of the citizens of our state. On May 17, the state Assembly voted 68-0 to support the most despicable piece of legislation that’s come through the halls in a while, which is saying a lot given the foolhardy proposals routinely on display in Sacramento. (It still requires approval by the Senate and the governor.)
