JOHANNESBURG — Winters in northern South Africa are usually cold and dry. But heavy rain, sleet and even light snow have fallen this week in the Johannesburg area.
Elizabeth Webster, a South African Weather Service forecaster, said Thursday the rain is unusual, but the cold temperatures are not. She says things should be back to normal Friday.
That’s good news for the Salvation Army, which has seen high demand for blankets this week from people living on the streets and other impoverished South Africans in Johannesburg, the country’s economic hub.
