White House defends Obama economic speech

White House press secretary Jay Carney defended the decision for President Obama to speak on the economy not long after Monday's mass shooting in Washington.

It was, Carney said, "entirely appropriate today for the president to talk about" the economy. "It's an important thing for the president to talk about."

The White House, he later added, didn't consider cancelling the president's remarks on the economy in light of the shooting.
