Justice Dept. explains 'inappropriate' tweet

The Justice Department has revoked a staffer's access to its social media accounts after its Twitter account published a tweet Tuesday morning with a tone uncharacteristic of its usual statements and announcements.

"CNN is the biggest troll of them all lmao #Petty," the department's tweet said, linking to a CNN story with the headline "Campaign denies Melania Trump's speech plagiarizes parts of Michelle Obama's." The acronym "lmao" is Internet slang for "laughing my ass off."

A department official later characterized the tweet as a mistake.

“A staffer in the public affairs office erroneously used the official Department of Justice Twitter handle to post a tweet that was intended for a personal account," the official said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "The tweet does not represent the Department’s views and was inappropriate for the Department of Justice’s official account, so it was immediately deleted. The staffer’s access to the Department’s social media accounts has been revoked."

Following the errant tweet, the department's public affairs office "has implemented procedural changes to the way we use our social media accounts and will provide additional social media training for employees," the official said. "The Justice Department takes this matter very seriously and will continue to take the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening in the future.”
