Freeman Essay #40: “Break This Vile Addiction”

(Don Boudreaux)

In the September 1999 Freeman I made a case for government to break its addiction to the so-called “war on drugs.”  (One difference between this addition of government and the addiction of an individual to drugs is that, when an individual is addicted to drugs, the bulk of the damage of that addiction falls on him or her, but when government is addicted to its bad habits, it actually benefits from the addiction while the damage is suffered by innocent others.)

My essay is below the fold.
