Have you ever wondered just how Meghan Markle stays looking so youthful and radiant? As it turns out, she has tons of shockingly simple beauty secrets she swears by. One of her favorite tricks is regular facial exercises — which might sound strange, but it apparently works wonders.
“I do facial exercises from one of my favorite aestheticians, Nichola Joss, who basically has you sculpt your face from the inside out,” Markle told Birchbox in 2014. “I swear it works, as silly as you may feel. On the days I do it, my cheekbones and jawline are waaaay more sculpted. There’s a reason she is in high demand around awards season when every actress wants to look A-plus.”
Luckily, you don’t have to be a celebrity or a royal to learn Joss’ secrets. She provided an easy guide to follow on her Instagram page for at-home facial exercises. Her exercises promise to firm and tone the jawline, as well as improve facial contours, fine lines, wrinkles, and firmness of the skin, which she explains in her 10-step process below.
Markle isn’t the only one raving about Joss’ methods. One Instagram user commented on her tips, “IN LOVE!!!!! Thank you thank you!! I’ve never had a facial before (too afraid because of how awful my skin used to be), but whoa. This massage tip was everything.”
Another user wrote, “If it works for a Princess, it will work for us!”
Facial exercises seem to be gaining traction, as a small study has been conducted by Northwestern University in January 2018. A sample of middle-aged women tried 30-minute daily facial exercises over a 20-week span. As a result, they saw improvements in the look of their skin.
According to the lead author of the study, dermatologist Murad Alam, “Now there is some evidence that facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of aging.”
“The exercises enlarge and strengthen the facial muscles, so the face becomes firmer and more toned and shaped like a younger face,” he added. “Assuming the findings are confirmed in a larger study, individuals now have a low-cost, non-toxic way for looking younger or to augment other cosmetic or anti-aging treatments they may be seeking.”
Believe it or not, you can now go to a literal “gym studio for the face” called Face Gym, where you can receive facial exercise treatments. The salon is based in the U.K., but if you’re in the U.S. — don’t worry. They have since opened a location in New York City.
Face Gym’s founder, Inge Theron, came up with the idea after receiving a face lifting procedure that kept her from leaving her house. She states on the company’s website, “I decided it was time to act and create a non-invasive, zero-risk, face lifting solution that really works.”
Thanks to Markle’s stamp of approval on facial exercises, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more Face Gym locations and similar salons popping up everywhere.
