Why ‘The Pioneer Woman’ Ree Drummond Says She’s ‘Always Skating on the Edge of Disaster’

“The Pioneer Woman” star Ree Drummond generally appears to have a calm and peaceful life at home and on the job. However, looks can be deceiving. Here’s the funny reason Drummond says she is “always skating on the edge of disaster.”

Ree Drummond says ‘The Pioneer Woman’ show almost didn’t happen

In a 2017 interview with “Delish,” Drummond spoke about her hesitation when she was presented with an opportunity to host her own Food Network cooking show. She says she wasn’t sold on the idea of having a show because she was used to remaining behind the scenes. As a food blogger, she was comfortable staying hidden. Here’s what Drummond had to say about her reaction when the Food Network opportunity was presented to her:

When I first talked to Food Network about doing a TV show, I was a food blogger. I was very much behind the camera. I’m definitely not someone who ever thought about being a TV personality or anything like that, so when we first started discussing the possibility of my having a cooking show, I did balk a little bit.

You know, I just didn’t really see how, but decided to give it a try when they offered to come out to the ranch. When I realized it wouldn’t be me traveling and going to a studio somewhere, I thought, I’m never more comfortable than I am at home in my home kitchen, so I’ll give it a try.

During an interview with “Cowboys and Indians” magazine, Drummond shared what life is like behind the scenes. She spoke about her new cookbook and what it takes to run an empire. Although Drummond usually appears pulled together when she’s on Food Network, she revealed a lot goes into making sure things run smoothly. Drummond says she’s naturally disorganized and it takes effort for her to stay on track. She explained to the publication why disaster is usually around the corner:

I’m not being self-deprecating when I say that I have always been a naturally disorganized person. I can also be very scatterbrained, and my mind can wander if I’m bored. What I have found over time, though, is that if I am passionate about the subject matter, I stay engaged much more easily. I love writing and sharing how-tos and the goings-on with my family, so it’s easy for me to chat naturally about those things.

As for being organized, that is a skill I have had to learn over time, through much trial and error–and tears and forgotten appointments. I am defensively organized, let’s put it that way. But I’m always skating on the edge of disaster in terms of becoming a complete mess.

Although Drummond cooks a lot and appears on her weekly Food Network show, that doesn’t mean gathering recipes for a new cookbook comes easily. Drummond puts a lot of care into each cookbook she creates.

Drummond told “Tulsa World” it often takes her a few months just to make a list of the recipes she wants to share in her cookbook. “Usually a new cookbook starts with me making a list of recipes I’m passionate about sharing. And that usually takes a couple of months, because things need to evolve before I come up with a more or less complete list. Then I see if there’s some sort of theme I can use to try and connect everything together.”
