There (Probably) Isn’t a ‘Star Wars’ Plot Hole in ‘The Clone Wars’ Final Season Trailer

Fans of The Clone Wars have waited for a conclusion to the beloved series since it was canceled in 2013. After its 5th season, Lucasfilm gave it the boot to go a different route with its animation, but the fans’ fervor and love for the show brought it back to Disney+. While there was intended to be two more seasons, this final one will finally bridge the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith like Dave Filoni and George Lucas intended. Because of this, a lot of events in Episode III are revisited in this new season. But does the trailer already show a plot hole because of this?

The new ‘The Clone Wars’ trailer shows a pregnant Padmé

The Season 7 trailer premiered Jan. 22 to much anticipation and was greeted with even more excitement; it already has 8 million views between YouTube and Twitter. As stated above, these fans are dedicated and the trailer delivered on everything they’ve been waiting for. Not only did Maul and Ahsoka take up the main focus of the trailer, but it also shows its connection to Revenge of the Sith

When Mace Windu mentions the “plot to destroy the Jedi,” fast fans already linked it to the live-action version. But that’s not the only part. Anakin Skywalker is also shown reaching at a hologram of Padmé Amidala, and she has a noticeable bump. She’s also in a similar outfit to what she wears to Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. That last bit isn’t as important though; she’s worn a similar outfit on The Clone Wars in past seasons, as she does with a lot of her Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith outfits.

Some are saying that it creates a timeline plot hole for ‘Revenge of the Sith,’ but not so fast

Screen Rant and CBR point out that this might already introduce a plot hole. The reason being the timeline of when she tells Anakin she’s pregnant. The first scene back on Coruscant, after Anakin and Obi-Wan come back from saving Palpatine, is when she tells him about the babies (baby at the time). Screen Rant states that since The Clone Wars takes place before Revenge of the Sith, this might mess up Star Wars continuity.

However, that’s not the case. As the trailer shows and as Filoni has said, this season happens at the same time as Episode III. We, of course, don’t know exactly when it starts, but Season 7 will show the Jedi Purge (aka Order 66), which occurs at the end of Revenge of the Sith. So even if Season 7 starts before Revenge of the Sith, when Padmé tells Anakin about the pregnancy, parts of the season will interconnect.

This means that this holochat is most likely already after he knows she’s pregnant. Possibly right before or even after he’s pledged himself to Palpatine (if we’re to go by her outfit). Plus, it doesn’t seem like Filoni would retcon something so easily noticeable.

What can we expect from ‘The Clone Wars’ Season 7?

The reason we already know what arcs are most likely going to appear in Season 7 is thanks to the “Untold Clone Wars” panel at Star Wars Celebration in 2015. Filoni and Lucas’ plans were laid out for how the series would show Order 66 and finish the narrative of the Clone Wars. And the trailer confirmed a lot.

Both the panel and trailer show an emphasis on the Clones and where they stand as the war comes to an end. The reappearance of Maul and Mandalore is a major centerpiece of the season, with the culminating Siege of Mandalore coinciding with the Jedi Purge in the timeline. Ahsoka’s feelings and journey after leaving the Jedi Order is going to be shown, and how she ends up leading as Commander again for the siege. Plus, her battle with Maul will be one of the biggest moments this season.

There’s a lot to look forward to, even if plot points are already out there on where this is heading. But plot holes are something we can’t know until it’s released.
