Prince William and Kate Middleton are taking a page out of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s book. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just hired the Sussexes’ former social media coordinator, David Watkins, in a bid to give their Instagram account a boost. The hiring is the latest move in the couple’s rumored competition with the Sussexes, who are starting their new lives in Los Angeles.
Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Instagram success
In 2019, Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, hired Watkins to manage their Instagram account. According to The Sun, an inside source claimed that the couple aimed to “conquer the world” through social media and felt like Watkins was perfect for the job.
“Harry and Meghan want to conquer the world and they want to do it through the prism of social media to really connect with their followers,” the source dished. “David is the perfect person to help them do this: his amazing video skills and visionary photographs have already been wiser praised by the Sussexes’ fans.”
Watkins, a former professional hockey player, is a self-described sports fanatic who has competed in marathons and an Ironman. He also claims to be a marketing enthusiast, which is why the Sussexes hired him when they launched their Instagram account.
Harry and Meghan launched their own Instagram, Sussex Royal, in the spring of last year. The couple had been using the Kensington Royal — which was launched by Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince Harry — account and quickly reached one million followers.
With the Sussexes no longer a part of the royal family, they are not allowed to use their titles anymore. This includes their main brand, Sussex Royal, which officially went inactive starting March 31.
Prince William and Kate Middleton hire Watkins
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry let go of most of their royal staffers last month and are managing their own Instagram account at the moment. Keen to give their social media presence a boost, William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, just hired Watkins to work his magic.
Watkins recently updated his LinkedIn profile to show that he is now the head of Digital Communications & Social Media for TRH The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.
Before hiring Watkins, Prince William and Kate used the same team that Buckingham Palace employed for their social media accounts.
Kensington Palace has not commented on William and Kate’s plans for social media. There is no telling if Watkins will give the couple’s Instagram a boost, but royal watchers are convinced that a rivalry is brewing online.
A look at the royal family’s biggest Instagram rivalry
When Prince Harry and Meghan started their Instagram account in April of last year, they reached one million followers faster than anyone expected. At the time, royal experts believed they would easily eclipse William and Kate’s followers within a month or two.
But that never happened. Instead, the Cambridges and Sussexes have been in a tight race for the most followers, with Harry and Meghan staying at a close second. Whenever the Sussexes catch up, both accounts remain very close in followers.
The fact that Harry and Meghan have not surpassed William and Kate in followers has sparked numerous theories. According to Cosmopolitan, this includes the idea that William and Kate are buying followers and that Instagram promoted Kensington Royal more than Sussex Royal.
The royal family previously shut down reports that they manipulate their social media stats. At this point, we cannot say for sure what is going on, but the numbers are a little suspect.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make another Instagram tweak
A day before their exit became official, Harry and Meghan posted a final message on their Sussex Royal account, which has now become inactive. But before the two launch their new account, they made one more tweak to Sussex Royal.
The Sussexes just disabled comments on all of the posts associated with Sussex Royal. The move deleted all previous comments, so fans cannot see anything they wrote over the past year.
The couple has also changed which accounts they follow. Harry and Meghan now only follow three accounts, all of which are associated with positive and uplifting reports.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently living in LA. Sources say the couple is eying a house in Malibu, where they will set up their new base in North America.Read the original article from The Cheat Sheet
