Newsday publisher to step down at the end of the week

Gordon McLeod, the publisher of Long Island’s Newsday paper, is stepping down at the end of the week, POLITICO has learned. “I have made a personal decision to step down as Publisher of the Newsday Media Group effective July 2,” McLeod wrote in a memo sent to Newsday staff Wednesday, a copy of which was reviewed by POLITICO. “Ed Bushey, SVP/General Manager and Debby Krenek, SVP/Digital & Editorial Director, will co-manage NMG following my departure. They are incredible leaders and partners so I am confident that I will be leaving the business in great hands.” McLeod’s abrupt departure is the first major change in the newspaper’s leadership since Altice, a Netherlands-based telecom company, completed a $17.7 billion acquisition of Newsday’s parent company, Cablevision, last week. When Cablevision and Altice struck a deal to sell last year, speculation began as to the types of cost-cutting that could occur once the sale was completed. Patrick Drahi, the founder and controlling shareholder of Altice, said at a media conference that he wished to change Cablevision’s “many layers of highly paid people,” particularly those who earned more than $300,000. It is not clear whether Altice intends to hold onto the newspaper, or whether it plans on selling it.McLeod is a longtime media industry fixture who formerly served in executive positions at CBS News, Time Inc., and The Wall Street Journal, took over as publisher of Newsday Media Group in 2014. McLeod’s memo to staff is below: Dear Friends and Colleagues,I have made a personal decision to step down as Publisher of the Newsday Media Group effective July 2. Ed Bushey, SVP/General Manager and Debby Krenek, SVP/Digital & Editorial Director, will co-manage NMG following my departure. They are incredible leaders and partners so I am confident that I will be leaving the business in great hands.Leading this organization has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me thanks to the talent and commitment of all of you. Every day I was impressed by the great work that is done here and I will always remember the many things I have learned from this extraordinary team. I will also remain very proud of the strides we made together to restructure and redefine our business so that it can continue to serve the communities we love. If I can ever help you in any way, you can always find me at [email.]Thank you,Gordon
