In China, Golden Week is a national holiday that starts on Oct. 1 and propels lots of mainlanders into Hong Kong’s shopping malls. However, pro-democracy protests have paralyzed traffic and the stores are feeling the pinch. Where is the next hot retail market likely to be? Many are looking toward Seoul. The Hong Kong Retail Management Association sees a drop of 15-50% in retail sales for Golden Week, compared with the same period a year earlier. The sectors recording the largest declines: watches and jewelry, fashion and accessories. When you combine and take into account StarMine analysts estimates, we are looking at a consensus of about a drop of 25% to 50%. However, the true impact won’t be known until the protests are over. Exhibit 1: Hong Kong Specialty Retail Price Seoul on the rise South Korea is full of history and Seoul is still considered an affordable tourist destination. The city’s government has also been proactive and has eased real estate taxes to boost the domestic economy. This is making it an attractive spot for big luxury retailers to open shop. Luxury names such as J. Mendel just opened two huge stores in Seoul. Jetsetters prefer big retail/flagship stores because they feel the big brands have better selection than the stores back home. Moreover, the tourists are on vacation and have more leisure time. Chanel just opened an exhibition in Seoul, while luxury Italian brands are opening pop-up stores. What’s more, luxury brands are paying close attention, and really catering to the affluent shopper who is looking for new exciting destinations for sightseeing, entertainment and shopping. In May, when Michael Kors opened his flagship store in Shanghai, he said the purpose was to introduce “the Michael Kors jetset lifestyle to the Chinese consumer” (Thomson Reuters StreetEvents, Q4 KORS earnings release, 5/28/14). Daks, which is owned by Japanese firm Sankyo Seiko Co. (8018.T) is a very popular retailer in Seoul, with the number-one non-domestic label in Korea. Looking at its performance on the StarMine models, it scores the highest possible 100 on the Value-Momentum model and 96 on Intrinsic Valuation, suggesting that the stock is a good value. The stock price is about ¥386.0, but is valued at almost double that — ¥800.81. Compound growth rate For Sankyo Seiko Co., after adjusting FY1, FY2, FY3-FY5 and LTG estimates for optimism bias, StarMine’s Intrinsic Valuation model arrives at a forward five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6%, placing fair value at ¥800.81/share. In contrast, market expectations are considerably lower. Plugging in today’s price and solving for growth suggests that investors are less optimistic, with a market implied five-year CAGR of -0.2%. Strong profit margins Daks’ margins are considerably stronger than the industry. Operating margin performance suggests that management is doing a good job. Korean retailers rise Turning to another retailer, the same can be said for Lotte Shopping Co. Ltd. (023530.KS), a Korea-based company mainly engaged in the operation of large scale shops including department stores and discount stores. Its StarMine Intrinsic Valuation score is a respectable 86. Looking for value The model suggests that Lotte shares are undervalued. Using the Dividend Discount Model, Lotte shares are estimated to be worth KRW606,872, almost twice the recent closing price of KRW313,500. For most of the past seven years, the price has been significantly below its estimated intrinsic value, suggesting that market expectations have been and are still low. Lotte’s cash flow It’s a company with aggressive expansion plans. However, even though it has been spending more money annually on capital expenditure, cash flow from operations continues to increase for the most part. Analyst optimism More than half of the analyst recommendations for the stock are a “strong buy” or a “buy.” Receive stories like this to your inbox as they are published. The Rise And Fall Of One Mall's Spider-Man Sculpture With An Erection (PHOTOS)

Spider-Man won't be hanging out at the Lotte Shopping Center in Busan, South Korea, anymore. According to culture and gaming blog Kotaku, critics began to notice that the superhero sculpture clinging upside-down to the mall's facade has an erection. Even more awkward? The statue was installed above a playground. Complaints spread online, and mall officials pressured artist Eunsuk Yoo to alter the piece or take it down, according to the site. He reportedly chose the latter. One pop culture blog couldn't resist poking fun: "Is his spider sense tingling, or is he is just really, really happy to see you?" Complex wrote. Spider-Man has spun off plenty of parodies before, but we have to say, this sculpture leaves very little to the imagination. Check out the installation below.
