Duterte’s Art of the Deal

Richard Javad Heydarian Security, Asia America suffers from a credibility gap in the Philippines, and Duterte has exploited this with conviction and verve. Editor’s Note: The following are excerpts from Richard Javad Heydarian’s latest book The Rise of Duterte: A Populist Revolt Against Elite Democracy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017). “I will be chartering [sic] a [new] course [for the Philippines] on its own and will not be dependent on the United States,” Duterte declared right after securing electoral victory. Without a doubt, it was an audacious statement from the then newly-elected Filipino president, who was set to take over one of America’s oldest and most loyal allies in history. At first, not many, including those within the diplomatic community, took his words too seriously, with some dismissing the “nationalistic” statements as soaring rhetoric bereft of policy substance. After all, Duterte himself began to communicate a more pragmatic strand of leadership as he inched closer to formally occupying the highest office in the land. Weeks before his inauguration, Duterte sought to reassure the media that it will be his “last time as a rude person.” Duterte promised that, “[w]hen I become president, when I take my oath of office…There will be a metamorphosis,” whereby he will “steadily [evolve] from a caterpillar [and] blossom into a butterfly.” The same message of reassurance was more than abundant during his inauguration and first State of the Nation Address (SONA) speeches. “On the international front and in the community of nations, let me reiterate that the Republic of the Philippines will honor treaties and international obligations,” he remarked during his unusually subdued inauguration speech (June 30). Trump Tweets St. Patrick’s Day Greeting In Irish Gaelic, But Spells It Wrong

function onPlayerReadyVidible(e){'undefined'!=typeof HPTrack&&HPTrack.Vid.Vidible_track(e)}!function(e,i){if(e.vdb_Player){if('object'==typeof commercial_video){var a='',o='m.fwsitesection='+commercial_video.site_and_category;if(a+=o,commercial_video['package']){var c='&m.fwkeyvalues=sponsorship%3D'+commercial_video['package'];a+=c}e.setAttribute('vdb_params',a)}i(e.vdb_Player)}else{var t=arguments.callee;setTimeout(function(){t(e,i)},0)}}(document.getElementById('vidible_1'),onPlayerReadyVidible); President Donald Trump used Twitter to wish Irish people around the world a happy St. Patrick’s Day in Irish Gaelic. But there was a slight problem with his well-intentioned Friday morning tweet in that he misspelled one of the words. Instead of correctly translating St. Patrick’s Day as “Lá Fhéile Pádraig,” he erroneously posted “Lá Fheile Phadraig.” Happy Lá Fheile Phadraig to all of my great Irish friends!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 17, 2017 Twitter users immediately spotted the additional “h” in the third word and delightedly pointed it out (some more savagely than others). @realDonaldTrump it's "Lá fhéile Pádraig" ya stupid orange git! #illegitimatepresident #dumbass #unfit #unqualified #spellcheck #resist— matt santorelli (@inkswellStudios) March 17, 2017 @realDonaldTrump You misspelled Padraig. Typical.— Alan Greenspan (@spangreen) March 17, 2017 Really? @realDonaldTrump - "Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit" is correct. But then why start now?— Kathleen Obrahalahan (@obrah318) March 17, 2017 @realDonaldTrump You spelt it wrong...'Lá Fhéile Pádraig' — Lorcan O'Connor (@LorcanOConnor2) March 17, 2017 @realDonaldTrump Slight correction: It's "Lá Fhéile Pádraig." You don't need a séimhiú on "Pádraig," and you forgot the fada.— William Brennan (@wm_brennan) March 17, 2017 It’s the latest St. Patrick’s Day-linked gaffe from Trump and his administration. At Thursday’s Friends Of Ireland luncheon in Washington D.C., Trump was widely ridiculed for reciting a proverb for his “Irish friends” ― which turned out to probably not be Irish at all ― and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) held up a lackluster pint of Guinness and got seriously dragged on Twitter. Team Trump’s green St. Patrick’s Day edition of its “Make America Great Again” hats were also found to feature a four-leaf clover, instead of the shamrock associated with the day, stitched on the back. type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related Coverage + articlesList=58cbc952e4b0ec9d29daf67a,58cb8c49e4b0be71dcf35dbb,58bfac3ee4b0c3276fb77f59,58a760a9e4b07602ad548ad0 -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
