Giant Japanese Conglomerate Flash-Crashes 20% At Open

Tosoh Corporation, the giant Japanese petrochemical conglomerate, collapsed over 20% to below JPY800 shortly after the Japanese open, on volume eleven times average as traders scrambled to find out the catalyst. There was no news of course - just another flash-crash in a world of limited liquidity at the margin (where a small options-arb fund can drive the US equity market for a week). Share trading was halted for 25 minutes and re-opened unchanged...   Bloomberg notes Tosoh was not available for comment but: “Fat finger,” says Mikey Hsia, trader at Sunrise Brokers in Hong Kong. “I think someone just put in the wrong order on the stock and is now having to cover. It’s a technical error.”   “That’s what we’re hearing,” says Andrew Clarke, director of trading at Mirabaud Asia. “Very nasty for them.” However, one glance at the trading and ticks suggest maybe a large order started the ball rolling but the algos took over very quickly and ran billions in market cap off the company...   The drop erased the year's gains...

Japan stocks lower at close of trade; Nikkei 225 down 2.08%

Japan stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Financial Services, Insurance and Warehousing sectors led shares lower. At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 lost 2.08%. The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Maruha Nichiro Corp (TOKYO:1333), which rose 0.94% or 19.0 points to trade at 2039.0 at the close. Meanwhile, Nomura Holdings Inc (TOKYO:8604) added 0.34% or 3.0 points to end at 880.0 and Keio Corp. (TOKYO:9008) was up 0.33% or 3.0 points to 923.0 in late trade. The worst performers of the session were Tosoh Corp. (TOKYO:4042), which fell 10.98% or 86.0 points to trade at 697.0 at the close. Nippon Soda Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:4041) declined 4.84% or 39.0 points to end at 767.0 and SUMCO Corp. (TOKYO:3436) was down 4.70% or 71.0 points to 1441.0. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1735 to 147. Shares in Maruha Nichiro Corp (TOKYO:1333) rose to all time highs; gaining 0.94% or 19.0 to 2039.0. Shares in Nomura Holdings Inc (TOKYO:8604) rose to 52-week highs; rising 0.34% or 3.0 to 880.0. The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 1.15% to 21.16. Crude oil for August delivery was down 0.87% or 0.48 to $55.03 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in August fell 1.05% or 0.64 to hit $59.69 a barrel, while the August Gold contract fell 0.10% or 1.20 to trade at $1166.60 a troy ounce. USD/JPY was down 0.14% to 122.61, while EUR/JPY fell 0.69% to 135.51. The US Dollar Index was up 0.13% at 96.50.

Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 1.87%

Japan stocks were higher after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Transport, Transportation Equipment and Financial Services sectors led shares higher. At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.87% to hit a new all time high. The best performers of the session on the Nikkei 225 were Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (TOKYO:4183), which rose 7.52% or 34.0 points to trade at 486.0 at the close. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp (TOKYO:4188) added 6.35% or 47.6 points to end at 797.3 and Tosoh Corp. (TOKYO:4042) was up 5.68% or 44.0 points to 818.0 in late trade. The worst performers of the session were Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (TOKYO:4005), which fell 4.85% or 38.0 points to trade at 746.0 at the close. Sharp Corp. (TOKYO:6753) declined 1.81% or 3.0 points to end at 163.0 and Kao Corp. (TOKYO:4452) was down 1.73% or 103.0 points to 5835.0. Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange by 1573 to 310. Shares in Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (TOKYO:4183) rose to 3-years highs; gaining 7.52% or 34.0 to 486.0. Shares in Sharp Corp. (TOKYO:6753) fell to 52-week lows; falling 1.81% or 3.0 to 163.0. Shares in Tosoh Corp. (TOKYO:4042) rose to all time highs; up 5.68% or 44.0 to 818.0. The Nikkei Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was down 4.15% to 16.84 a new 6-months low. Crude oil for August delivery was down 0.26% or 0.15 to $60.23 a barrel. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Brent oil for delivery in August fell 0.08% or 0.05 to hit $63.29 a barrel, while the August Gold contract rose 0.14% or 1.60 to trade at $1185.70 a troy ounce. USD/JPY was up 0.21% to 123.64, while EUR/JPY fell 0.52% to 139.17. The US Dollar Index was up 0.54% at 95.03.
