Have we reached peak Costa Coffee?

The high-street chain has dominated the UK’s £9.6bn coffee market for years – but sales fell last year for the first time. Does competition from independents mean trouble is brewing? It was voted the nation’s favourite coffee shop for the eighth year running in 2017 and this week announced its latest branch: on the cobbles of Coronation Street in a groundbreaking product placement deal. Yet earlier this month, Costa Coffee announced that its sales dipped by 1.5% in the third quarter of 2017 – only the second time they have fallen. The chief executive of Whitbread – which owns Costa – put it down to a “structural shift to online shopping”. Continue reading...

‘My life’s stem was cut’ – a poem by Helen Dunmore

The writer is only the second person to posthumously win the Costa award. To celebrate, we present a poem from her winning collection, Inside the WaveWhatever the tribal allegiances at Tuesday’s Costa awards in London, the warmth was tangible when the book of the year gong went to Helen Dunmore, who died in June. Dunmore excelled over more than three decades in most of the categories in contention for the prize, but returned to her roots to claim it, not with her fine fiction for adults or children, but with her 12th and final poetry collection, Inside the Wave. The irony is that, if she were still alive, she would have been unlikely to win this avowedly populist prize.Five of the eight poetry collections that have won it since the book of the year category was introduced in 1985, in what were then the Whitbreads, have been animated by illness or death: Douglas Dunn and Christopher Reid mourned the deaths of their wives, while Jo Shapcott circled around her cancer diagnosis. Ted Hughes died before taking the prize for the second time with Birthday Letters in 1999. Continue reading...

GVC and Ladbrokes Coral: David gambles on Goliath | Nils Pratley

Last year’s merger with Coral gave Ladbrokes greater size, but only increased the appeal for the acquisitive GVCLadbrokes Coral’s bosses will try to sound cheerful about the prospect of being taken over by GVC Holdings, the company behind Sportingbet and Foxy Bingo. But, on the long view, this deal would be a corporate humiliation.Ladbrokes is one of the oldest names in British bookmaking and still collects the largest revenues. It traces its roots to 1886 and, under chairman Cyril Stein, boomed after the legalisation of betting shops in 1961. When Stein retired in 1993, the company, with a collection of Hilton hotels at a time, was worth £2bn. Now, a quarter of century later and with Coral on board, it is in discussions to surrender for just £3.1bn, plus a potential £800m kicker, to an Isle of Man-based company that was worth only £100m five years ago. David, after bulking up with a few deals, is bidding for Goliath. Continue reading...

The FCA should impose a price cap on rent-to-own companies

City regulator should deal with industry same way it did with payday lenders and target all forms of high-cost creditThe Financial Conduct Authority did a fine thing when it imposed price caps on payday lenders two years ago. The policy was popular and addressed obvious abuses. It was also well-crafted: payday lenders did not disappear altogether, which might have caused even nastier operators to fill the demand, but the survivors were obliged to clear up their acts. The regulator should take its cue from that success and see if there is a robust way to design a price cap for rent-to-own companies such as BrightHouse that provide household goods via hire purchase agreements at sky-high rates of interest.
